Day Trip
Ang Thong Marine Park day trip
Discover Koh Wua Talap island with six spectacular viewpoints to hike, promising some of the most magnificent scenery in Thailand.
Kayak the coastline to enjoy closer views of rock formations, trying to spot hornbills and monkeys. Learn about the unique flora and fauna of the Ang Thong Marine Park.
Bask in the sun at secluded Song Pee Nong Beach.
With its steep, wild beaches, exceptional snorkeling, swimming, and an inland gem known as Emerald Lake, Koh Mae Ko is a true island paradise.
Trek to Emerald Lake to witness a splendid saltwater pool of emerald color surrounded by green foliage. Emerald Lake links to the sea via an underground tunnel. At the same time, above, there is a 100-meter viewpoint to enjoy its glittering beauty.
Visit Koh Phaluai – the largest island of Ang Thong Marine Park, with some of the best remnants of mangrove forest around. Several smaller islands encircle Koh Phaluai, with most residents farmers or fishers.
Whimsical monkeys and shy crabs inhabit the hidden beach on Koh Phaluai. While lovely to watch, the monkeys are wild, so be on guard and don’t feed them.
Discover the Stonebridge on Koh Sam Sao – a natural feature linking two rocks, big enough to dinghy under. Across from Stonebridge are two small islands connected (usually) by a sandbar. You’ll find excellent snorkeling and your private beach (at least for a while!).
Island hop to Koh Wao for an enjoyable cave swimming experience and several snorkeling spots around a less-visited island nearby, located off the east coast. Just stay away from the crowds!
How to reach Ang Thong Marine Park
Ang Thong National Marine Park is located in the Gulf of Thailand, in the vicinity of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan islands. That means your nearest airport is in Koh Samui, and it is an international one! Once in Koh Samui, the best way to reach Ang Thong Marine Park is by private yacht or by taking a group tour by speedboat. The speedboat will reach Ang Thong Marine Park in 1 hour from Koh Samui, while it will take longer from Koh Phangan. Because the marine park spreads 42 islands that change with seasonality, the best way to experience this off-beaten-path destination is on a customized itinerary by taking a private boat tour with Islander. Ang Thong National Marine Park private tour takes 8 hours to complete.
Ang Thong Marine Park open season
The best time to explore the diversity and beauty of Ang Thong National Marine Park is anytime from March to September. During that period, you will experience constant sunny weather, calm and clear waters, and way more activities to do. Although the Ang Thong National Marine Park tour opens from 21 December, the best season arrives from March.
Ang Thong Marine Park closed
Ang Thong National Marine Park is closed from November 1st to December 21st due to the prevailing monsoon causing high waves and strong currents in this part of Thailand. Note that the weather continues to be unstable throughout January and often till February.
Ang Thong Marine Park overnight
As in every national park of Thailand, there is a lack of accommodation options in Ang Thong Marine Park since the development is strictly controlled and limited. However, there are few options available to the visitors, all located in Koh Wua Talap, the largest island in the marine park.
The first option is to rent a simple bungalow through the official national park website if you’d like to experience raw living in the jungle. The second option is to stay in a tent around one of a few campsites, which gives you a massive sense of freedom but even more uncertainty. The third option is to stay in Ang Thong National Marine Park overnight on board one of the yachts that you can charter with Islander.
The latter is not a bad idea if you want to know the real, local insight into the best of everything. Like the best snorkeling spots and dive sites, pink dolphins and turtles, picnics on deserted beaches, and authentic jungle experiences that will make your Thailand holiday one-of-a-kind.
Ang Thong Marine Park or Koh Tao
Ang Thong means ‘Golden Bowl’ in Thai, literally making Ang Thong National Marine Park a golden destination for a day trip while on vacation in Koh Samui or Koh Phangan. One of its most notable islands, Koh Wua Talap, is a developed tourist hotspot featuring a demanding hike. With six viewpoints one after another, the views from the very top are simply stunning. When compared to Koh Tao, Ang Thong Marine Park tour promises more of secluded sandy beaches, kayaking blue-green and shallow waters, thick jungle, diverse ecosystem, and incredible trekking. At the same time, Koh Tao is a remarkable destination for snorkeling and diving. You have to really try both for a complete Koh Samui or Koh Phangan holiday.
Ang Thong Marine Park or Chumphon Marine Park
Chumphon National Marine Park is mostly undiscovered and unheard of by modern vacationers in Koh Samui. Despite both Ang Thong Marine Park and Chumphon Marine Park belonging to the same Chumphon Archipelago (including Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao), the latter is tucked further away for a day trip by boat from Koh Samui. Chumphon Marine Park spreads across 40 islands nearby Chumphon Province on the mainland and is more comfortable to access from Koh Tao. It is fair to presume that Chumphon Marine Park’s tourism dates are yet to come, taking into account the quality of diving and snorkeling that it provides. Until then, the Ang Thong National Marine Park tour will remain the most popular day trip destination from Koh Samui.
