Off the southern coast of Gam Island, Manta Sandy is an iconic diving and snorkeling site in Raja Ampat, famous for its consistent population of manta rays between October and April. As the area is rich in plankton, these gentle giants can be found feeding at the surface or hovering over a cleaning station and are not scared off by respectful snorkelers and divers. At over five meters long, manta rays are enormous. However, they are also curious and intelligent, so they will often come and check you out if you are patient. There is no feeling on Earth like the sense of wonder when face to face with these humongous rays. Be sure to book your diving or snorkeling adventure in advance, as tourism has forced the locals to cap the number of divers at 20 per day to respect the manta rays.
