If you’re looking for a laid-back, tropical paradise, then Yapen island in Cenderawasih Bay is a perfect choice. There are excellent surf breaks around the island that are almost undiscovered. Ample coral reef and wreck dive sites lie within a stone’s throw of Yapen island.
The World Wildlife Fund has identified Yapen as a rainforest ecoregion for its unique birdlife and flora, which thrive among the mountainous, lush interior. The beautiful bird-of-paradise is the island’s mascot, along with the rare Belimbing turtle – the largest sea turtle in the world, reaching an astounding 2 meters long!
There are some stunning bays both to the east and west of Serui, Yapen island’s largest town. With untouched beaches throughout, you’re almost guaranteed to have them all to yourself. Serawu and Ambai Islands, just off Serui, make a perfect day’s outing; be sure to drop into Ambai village and the illuminating stilted community surrounding the bay.
