Named in honor of the French frigate that circumnavigated the globe, the remote, rough, and wild beauty of Uranie island rarely sees many visitors. Its sheltered bay in the west features terrific reefs, and there are numerous caves along the north coast that are home to a large population of grey reef sharks. Uranie forms a dramatic landscape, including an eye-catching little lake hidden behind a ridge – best gazed upon from a hilltop. The greenery is quite dense, and the scenery is slightly jagged around remote Uranie. However, the cavernous quality of the hills leaves much to be explored for the more adventurous in the heart. Because most Raja Ampat travelers opt for nearby Wayag, which is remote by itself, we recommend visiting Uranie Island when taking a longer yacht holiday across the archipelago.
