Above all other epicness, Mango Bay is one of the top three snorkeling places on Koh Tao. Also known as Ao Mamuang, the bay is named after many mango trees that once grew on this part of Koh Tao in abundance. An epic beach
Mango Bay is among the top scenic bays in Koh Tao, featuring a small charming beach with a coral reef on either side. Due to shallows off the beach and the sandy seafloor that gives the water a beautiful turquoise green hue, Mango Bay is a go-to destination for water activities. In particular, the bay has also come to be popular as being beginner-friendly for diving and snorkeling. For a small yet picturesque beach, it allows everyone to have the fun that they wish both above and under water.
Diving in Mango Bay
As mentioned, the depth in the central part of Mango Bay just off the beach is shallow, and there is almost no current, making it a popular spot for beginner divers to practice. At the same time, the west side of Mango Bay is recommended for experienced divers as they can opt to drop off at the outer edges of the bay. It is at this side of the bay that the Jenkins’ whip ray can be found hiding among the boulders of the reef. On the east side of the bay Mango Bay Koh Tao, you can experience a vibrant marine life among beautiful coral reefs, including resident parrotfish and large schools of grouper.
Hiking in Mango Bay
Hiking to the Mango Bay viewpoint is another popular activity. Featuring an easy trek, the views of the rocky shoreline and turquoise green water below are simply astonishing. Hiking at Mango Bay can be combined with an island-hopping trip to a neighboring Koh Nang Yuan, just 10 minutes boat ride, for an even better panoramic experience.
Day trip destination
Today, many tourists acknowledge Mango Bay to be the ultimate destination for day trips not only from Koh Tao itself but from Koh Samui and Koh Phangan too. Thus it can get pretty crowded during the peak travel season, especially those beginner divers. Nevertheless, Mango Bay is ideal at packing all the fun of Koh Tao into a small, adventurous bay.
