Koh Phai is better known as Bamboo Island by the locals. This deserted island is located approximately 20km west of Pattaya. It boasts of being the largest of all Pattaya’s islands at 4km long and 1.4km wide. Despite being a deserted island where visitors are not allowed to stay overnight, more and more are coming to this island for snorkeling and diving activities.
Koh Pai island is guarded by the Royal Thai Navy, and you can see Navy personnel maintaining the beauty and condition of the beautiful beaches. Although not allowed to stay, travelers can still explore the beauty of this island but do take note that a small fee is required for you to visit Koh Phai. Visitors to Bamboo island can be prepared to be entranced by its exotic coral reefs where swimming and snorkeling are allowed. Those who are more adventurous may opt to explore the old shipwrecks from the Second World War, which would surely allow you to be awed and inspired. Being Navy-owned, no permanent facilities or structures are permitted. Thus, the only structure that remains is a lighthouse that welcomes majestically.
Many exciting activities are allowed despite Koh Phai being under the watchful eye of the Royal Thai Navy. From swimming and snorkeling on captivating coral reefs to merely sunbathing on the pristine beach is sure to leave anyone with a memorable getaway. Besides, casual sightings of sea horses in the shallow clear waters of Koh Khai contribute to the popularity of the island. As there is currently no ferry service to the island, chartering a speedboat or joining an organized day trip remains to be the only choice for traveling.
